 SOFAER & CO.'S BUILDINGS

MR. ISAAC A. SOFAER was appointed a member of the Municipal Committee in January, 1909. Born at Bagdad in 1867, he was brought to Rangoon by his father, Mr. Abraham Isaac Soraer, when nine years of age. Upon leaving St. Paul's High School, Rangoon, where he was educated, he joined a firm of wine and spirit merchants and remained with them for ten years. In 1893 he started business on his own account, and already the firm's premises have been enlarged to six times their original size. In addition to wines and spirits, Messrs. Sofaer & Co. do a large business in oilman-stores, and export a considerable quantity of rice to the Straits Settlements. Mr. Sofaer is a large landed proprietor, and owns one of the finest buildings in the town. He is a highly respected member of the Jewish community, and has been a trustee of the Jewish Synagogue for ten years. He is also a member of the Excise Committee of the Agricultural Society, and the Burma Pasteur Institute. Mr. Sofaer married a daughter of Me Ezekiel Solomon, of Rangoon, and has two sons and four daughters. Mr. Meyer Abraham Sofaer, who has recently become a partner in the firm, has served for a considerable time in the business. He is married to a daughter of Mr. David Jssac, and has three sons and one daughter.
