Rangoon is a dead city when Rodgers
enters it. This is normally main shopping street, the throngs... Sule
Pagoda Road. Three Burmese can barely be picked out in the distance,
standing on a corner.

only hotel that had not yet closed altogether was called the Minto
Mansions. In its torrid hall, half a dozen English officers were
gloomily reading the papers. They cast a startled look in my direction
when I came in with my bags and asked for a room. I learned from the
manager that his terrified Burmese and Indian servants were fleeing one
