Minto Mansions Hotel during World War2

Eve Curie, Author & Journo: "The only hotel that had not yet closed altogether was called the Minto Mansions. In its torrid hall, half a dozen English officers were gloomily reading the papers. They cast a startled look in my direction when I came in with my bags and asked for a room. I learned from the manager that his terrified Burmese and Indian servants were fleeing one after another." • Harry Hpone Thant According to available information, this was at the corner of Leeds(Khayaypin Lann) and Halpin(Pyitaungsu Yeiktha). MOst probably where the Info Section cum staff quarters of the PRC Embassy is located. The whole plot could have been sub-divided later into small residential plots and sold off. But what is intriguing is how this huge edifice disappeared! Maybe bombed by Allies? Because one scrap of information was it was also a Japanese Army Club.

The "Minto Mansions", now demolished, once considered the best hotel in Rangoon together with the Strand. It was located at the corner of Halpin Road and Leeds Road (opposite where the Children's Hospital is today). Boasted the "only French chef in the Indies" (M. La Claie).
