This photograph was taken at home in New York with family on his 60th birthday.
U Thant retired at the end of 1971 after ten years as UN Secretary General. He was already unwell from exhaustion and the stress of work, he would be diagnosed with cancer less than two years later.
He was best known internationally for his roles in the Cuban Missile Crisis, and other international conflicts as well as his efforts to promote international development.( Thant Myint-U )
