The Secretariat building c.1900

he Secretariat building c.1900. The first is a view from the corner of Dalhousie and Judah Ezekiel streets (now Mahabandoola and Theinbyu streets), the second from Dalhousie and 42nd Street.
The building complex is still there, though not in very good shape, minus the big dome, which I hope can one day be properly restored. The Secretariat was originally the centre of the colonial bureaucracy, then the seat of Burmese government and Burmese democracy from 1948-1962, and most recently housed ministry offices from 1962-2006. It is of course where General Aung San and his colleagues were assasinated in July 1947. It is also an historic place in so many other ways. It is where Burmese parliamentary democracy was born and was where dozens of Burmese statesmen and public servants worked over many decades.
The Yangon Heritage Trust completed a study of the Secretariat and renovation options in 2012.
